Best way to get videos to play on all devices

What I need is to embed a video into a sales page and then be able to see that video play perfectly from iPhone and any other device.

These videos are normally shot with an iPhone camera or some other lower tech device. They are usually about 10 minutes long.

My question is, what are ALL the specs that I should know to ensure that these videos will play reliably across browsers and devices? At least the widest possible spectrum?

the default uploading of an mp4 isn't doing the trick.

Ideally I can give instructions to my clients on the settings to record their videos on, or at least do a bulk modification of whatever they send me from the start, slap them into their sales pages, and be done with the job... in contrast to running into errors like not having the video auto play in iPhone, or pause after 10 seconds in iPhone...etc

You need to encode the file using HandBrake, default settings + web optimized – http://handbrake.fr/, try that.

BTW, no matter how you encode your video files, they will NEVER autoplay on any mobile device - iPhone, iPad, Android. This is a restriction built into the devices themselves (and for good reason).

Yes, they mainly cite this reason due to not downloading unnecessary data over 3g.

The other piece of it is that people are often using their mobiles in places where the last thing they want is to have the device suddenly start playing some loud, obnoxious soundtrack on a video. On my own desktop, I'm often startled by a web page that autostarts a video. On a mobile, it could be a real embarrassment!
