HTML5 player YouTube support?

Hi,

We love the JWPlayer and use it on all our client projects to deliver video, so well done, its a great product. We were excited to read about the HTML5 player, especially as a lot of our clients are looking at support for the Apple devices now, and so we've been playing around with it recently in an effort to "port" a site over to be iPhone 'friendly'.

Getting to it....We fully realise that its in 'Beta', but the one thing we did notice, was that it doesn't seem to support externally hosted video playback (i.e. Youtube) directly like the Flash based player. (or am I wrong?) This feature is a really powerful asset for us on the Flash player, as it means we can build CMS screens which allow the client the freedom to use both locally hosted and/or externally hosted video interchangeably. Naturally now however, the systems we've put in place for this won't support these links on the HTML5 player.

Is there a configuration I'm missing perhaps? Maybe an addon or API call to enable this? (Or is it just not possible?) Be interested to know if this is in the pipeline, so if anyone has any feedback let me know :)

Thanks and good work

Ciaran

Any update on this? Has YouTube released an HTML5 api yet?

@Andrew -

YouTube has released an experimental JavaScript API for both Flash and HTML5:

http://code.google.com/apis/youtube/iframe_api_reference.html

We may consider adding this in at some point (http://developer.longtailvideo.com/trac/ticket/1214) but at present the API is still experimental, so we haven’t added it into the JW Player yet. It’s still on our radar however.

Hi guys,

I want to ask if the last version of JW Player is now compatible with youtube html5. I tried something with the non-commercial version of JW Player but couldn't make it work. I want to make it work on my website and automatically fallback to html5 where there is no flash support in the browser, but I was unable.

Can somebody give me information about this ? Is now the Youtube API added in JW ?

The player does not use the YouTube iFrame (HTML5) API. In HTML5 mode, the player reverts to inserting the YouTube object/embed code, which is handled gracefully in iOS by replacing it with the native QuickTime player.

That's cool...
It's this working only in JW Embedder or in simple embed code too ?

This only works using the JW Embedder. Using an <embed> tag with the JW Player swf file will not work.

We're using the HTML5 embed method with modes on a CMS-based site, and would like the option to pass in a YouTube file every now and then (where we're not using our own hosted files).

Should the current version of the player automatically fail over to the Flash mode if it detects that it is a YouTube video, or was that something still in the pipeline?

Thanks! :D

If Flash is available, the YouTube video should be fine, but I might consider using Flash as the primary embed method in the case of a YouTube video, seeing as the video will be rendered in Flash anyway.

Hi, I'm currently trying to get YouTube videos working through JW Player on iOS, but it's not working - I get the following error:

The video could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk_2_SSzczs

I'm using JW Embedder, and have setup the mode for HTML5 and am providing it with the URL as you can see in this error message. Can you please tell me what I might be doing wrong, or point me in the direction of some documentation about this?

Thanks,
Bron

This video works for me on an iPhone 4S:

Now that the "experimental" status has been removed from the HTML5 player, can we anticipate seeing it integrated with JW Player at some point in the not-too-distant future?

This is on the roadmap for future development, but I can’t give you any sort of estimate as to when it might happen.

Any update on YouTube video suppor in the HTML5 player? Flash is dying faster and faster now, it seems, so even an ETA would be good.

Thanks!

We are only going to be supporting it on devices for the time being.
