MP4 (mp4v&mp4a) file playing audio only

I'm having problems playing an mp4 file, using the mp4v and mp4a codecs. The URL to the file does not end in the file extension (it has a set of security parameters following it) but I'm used the flashvar "type=video". I can successfully play FLV1 encoded files with a .mp4 filename extension, from the same location, also using security parameters. I've also tried the flashvar "type=mp4", although I am using JW FLV Player 4.2.90. I've tried giving the problematic file a .mov or .flv extension, to no avail. The same file will successfully play using VLC media player, regardless of the extension. This leads me to conclude there must be a compatibility problem between the JW FLV Player and the mp4v codec.

Any ideas?

I'm currently uploading the file to the nonsecure location http://bitcast-a.v1.o1.sjc1.bitgravity.com/planetstream/gph08ep2.mp4, it should be available 10 minutes from now. (approx 2008/12/03 05:20am GMT), so if anyone has success playing this using the JW FLV player, please let me know, including what parameters you used to play it. (be warned, the file is approx 270MB in size)

I've just tested the video on the player wizard on this site - I get the same problem there.

I cannot get JW player to play MP4 files. It plays the audio, but not picture. I see lots of other people have this problem and various solutions have been offered. All of them seem to require a high level of computer coding ability which I do not have. FLV file play ok

My site is wwww.nowuc.com.au

Does anyone have a simple bloggers solution? The troublesome video is here:

Or do I have to convert MP4 to FLV and lose a lot of quality and time?

Wd appreciate any help.

@Crispin – How did you encode this file?

I had the same problem like you, I've encoded the video to .mp4 and JW player played only sound, not a picture. But I found a solution. I use FormatFactory (http://www.formatoz.com/) to convert between video formats and if I choose "Convert to MP4" function, in configuration I could choose between 3 types of video encoding - MPEG4, XVID and H264. First time I chose MPEG4 and JW player didn't play picture, but second time I chose H264 and everything was OK.

So I recommend you to convert your video to MP4 with H264 video encoding.

I have the same problem. JWPlayer only plays audio and not video for MP4. I've tried the "configurator" here; http://www.longtailvideo.com/players/jw-player-now/, but it won't play video. Why?

When I open the video in VLC I see that the video has MPEG-4 Video (mp4v) kodek.

I just downloaded your video. The video is not encoded in H.264, which is why it will not work in our Flash Player. Flash requires this.
