Http Streaming and Smooth Streaming

I know that Arjen from codeshop offers modules that work with the JW Player. Specifically, the http pseudo-streaming module and now I see the smooth streaming module. I've been away for awhile.

I am a bit confused. Is the smooth streaming module an improvement to the http streaming module? Or might they be used side by side for different purposes?

Also, are there any vars that need to be set in the JW Player to use these two modules? Or do they work out of the box (as long as JW Player and server modules are installed).

You would run one module or the other, not both.
