No controls on iPad with HLS adaptive streaming

Hi,
I'm switching from RTMP streaming to HLS adaptive streaming and that works OK on desktops, but on iPad, I get no play button, just the poster image.
The problem is that it looks like an image instead of a video, so most people won"t even know it is a video.
Have a look here: https://www.raboo.info/new/laboratory-experiments/water-reflection/simle html5

I'm using the default skin. I wouldn't like to add a play button in the poster image because that looks bad on desktops.
Any idea how to solve this?
Thanks!

Which iPad are you testing this on? Which version of iOS?

ipad 2, iOS 6.1.3
The video plays if I double click on it but it'sz no intuitive.

And the videos don't run on Samsung Galaxy with Android 4.2.2, should I provide additional formats?
Currently, all bitrate versions are mp4 served from AWS.
Thank you beforehand.

Hello Rudolf,

It may be a good step to update your iOS release as that is a rather old iteration. They have also introduced a lot of great playback features in iOS10 that you might find resourceful such as Autoplay for Mobile: https://webkit.org/blog/6784/new-video-policies-for-ios/

Thanks for the article Randy, but like many people I can't update the iOS because the memory isn't big enough and I don't want to set videos to autoplay just for iPad.
After all, not everyone will want to play the videos immediately and it would be bad to eat bandwidth away from mobile users because either iPad or JW Player can't produce a play button. In general, autoplay is only good for video channels, i.e;: at places were vsitors expect that behavior (YouTube, Vimeo, etc)
Site using articles combining text and video should never use autoplay.

How come this works with progressive download and not with hls?

Hello Rudolf,

I understand your need here and owning an iPad 2 myself, it can be somewhat of a challenge as this hardware is on an older release. Currently our player embeds are not supported on any iOS release prior to iOS8. This can prove a bit challenging with any earlier release. This might explain why certain functions may not work. You could potentially try downloading an earlier copy of the player such as 6.12.4956 to see if this fairs better with playback. Please let me know if you need access to this lib as you would need a premium account or better.

Hi Randy,
Thank you, I have a copy of JW Player 6 and tested with it in the past. While it is fine on iPad and desktops, quite a few mobiles are not supported and there are other issues as well which have been improved in 7.7 and higher (like special characters in subtitles, skins, etc.).
So, I presume I have to give up older iPads regarding hls as and provide progressive download as a fallback.
Now remains the issue with Samsung smartphone Galaxi. While this worked in the past, it gives the following error now:"video format not supported."

Sorry, it works on Samsung now. No clue why it didn't before.
