Pop-up window in Firefox asks to save the file

I hope that I have the right section for this question.

My website - - has been using the Media Player on the home page since 2008. There has not been a potential issue until now.

I need to update the version of PHP on my host, probably to 5.5. It seems that when the version of PHP is changed to 5.5, it is triggering a pop-up window, which asks if I want to open or save a file, when the home page (which contains the video) is accessed. I withheld the upgrade, pending resolving the issue.

My web host is telling me that it is because of a buffer in php being too small to hold the data, and I am being advised to test this by removing various sections of the home page, among which is the video, to see if the problem is due to one of those.

I thought I would ask in advance, if you are aware of any issue that may arise on a website, related to this, due to an old version of JW Media Player. I am told that IE and Chrome are OK, the pop-up just happens in Firefox.

Hi, there.

My name is Alex and I am one of the Support Engineers at JW Player. I will be more than happy to assist you with your questions.

When I visit your page in Firefox, nothing is appearing prompting me to save anything.

Also, it does not appear that you are using JW Player. I am not seeing any reference to us in the source code of your page. It also looks you are using SWFObject for your video player.

Thank you.

Hello, Alex,

Nothing is appearing, because I pulled back the php 5.5 upgrade on the live site.

I still have my Paypal receipt, from July 27, 2008, to, for a commercial license. I believe that I changed whatever parameter reference it was, that allowed the showing or non-showing of JW Player.

This support forum does not seem to allow uploading of screenshots, but I can email it.

Hi, there.

We received your survey response recently regarding this case. I apologize for not getting back to you. Usually we receive a notification when customers respond to support threads but I’m certain I did not receive one from this thread, as I would have responded. I do apologize for the inconvenience.

I reached out to Jeroen to ask him what version of the player was available in July 2008 and he thinks it was most likely version 3. We provide support for our player versions for 18 months after the newer major release comes out. So this means that we stopped providing support or JW 3 around 18 months after JW 4 came out. Unfortunately, I don’t have dates for these releases but I can give you an example that support for JW 5 ended in May 2014.

Starting about two years ago, we switched our business model to be subscription-based so customers on a subscription are now automatically entitled to releases as they come out. Any licenses purchased before the switch to the subscription model, such as yours, are considered “one-time purchases”. This means that if you would like to purchase a subscription to JW Player 7, you can sign up at You also have the option of signing up for a Free account at the same URL.

Please let me know if you need any more help or have any other questions.

Thank you!
