Automatic Quality Selection Problems

Using Dynamic RTMP Streaming - it says: "The switching of quality is automatically done by JW Player, who selects the highest quality: Whose system-bitrate fits the current bandwidth of the connection. Whose width fits the current width of the player screen."

Can you elaborate on that? Questions I have are:
What is the algorithm or how does it determine bandwidth of the connection?
Are there ways to do extended tests?
Can it always default to the highest available then switch based on buffering?
How much does latency affect the results?
Is there a way to cheat the system so it tries the higher quality versions more (i.e. if there are 5 versions of 3kbps bitrate and 1 version at 500bps)

Thank you for your help.

Hi, Tom.

My name is Alex and I am one of the Support Engineers at JW Player.

Since our player simply does whatever a valid RTMP stream’s manifest tells it to do, I believe these questions would be better answered by a streaming provider, such as Wowza. Once you obtain a valid RTMP stream’s URL, you can always test the playback on our player on our Stream Tester.

Please let me know if you need any more help or have any other questions.

Thank you!
