HTML Player with Adaptive bit rate streaming

Hi,
Since we are migrating to hmtl version, we would like to use an html video player with adaptive bitrate streaming (VOD )support. Our intended targets are both mobile and desktops ( Consider latest browsers for desktop ). It would be great if you can guide me to pick the best from JW player frameworks. Our main requirement is that, the video should play smoothly with a proper switching ( quality ) on an AUTO mode and obviously there should be an option for choosing the quality as per user like.

Thanks in Advance,
Arun

Hi, Arun.

My name is Alex and I am one of the Support Engineers at JW Player. I will be more than happy to assist you with your questions.

I would recommend you use HLS, as its an adaptive format that works with our player across desktop and mobile browsers. The only caveat, however, is that our player currently has to use Flash Player to render the HLS stream in browsers that do not natively support it, which are Chrome, Firefox and IE. This will change, however, when we release an upcoming version that will render HLS in HTML5 across all supported browsers.

Please let me know if you need any more help or have any other questions.

Thank you!

Thanks a lot Alex.
Have couple of questions based on your reply.

""however, when we release an upcoming version that will render HLS in HTML5 across all supported browsers.""
Q: Does it mean that, the upcoming version of Html player itself have the support of playing multibitrate streams in almost every browsers ( desktop/android/iOS ) and it NEVER require any kind of plugins ?

Q: Can I upgrade to the latest HLS supported version from my existing license of JWplayer ?

Q: Any idea about, how long should I wait for next release? less than 6 months OR more ?

Thanks,
Arun

All I know currently is that rendering HLS streams will soon no longer require Flash. As to how our developers are accomplishing this, whether it’s through the use of another plugin or not, I’m not sure. You have to remember that HLS is only natively supported in Safari and Microsoft Edge, so in order for this to happen, there has to be some magic going on inside of our player.

Q: Can I upgrade to the latest HLS supported version from my existing license of JWplayer ?

This feature will be rolling out in a future version of JW Player 7, so if your license currently allows you to stream HLS content, it will also allow you to stream it in HTML5. (HLS streaming is only available for Premium accounts, or higher.)

Q: Any idea about, how long should I wait for next release? less than 6 months OR more ?

I have no clue regarding a timeframe, but if I were to guess – I would say less than 6 months.

Please let me know if you need any more help or have any other questions.

Thank you!
