Getting a little audio compression

Hi. So, thanks for helping with my last issue; after using handbrake as suggested, the vid plays much better in Chrome (still not perfect, but passable) and fine in FFox. I now have an audio compression issue, and thought this was worthy of a new topic.

The vid as output from HB is fine, but the upped video has some audible compression artifacts. Very slight, but there. In fact so slight, a person who does not have fine tuned ears probably would not be able to tell. So, it appears as tho something is happening when the jw site does the conversion. Funny, this didn't happen with the last batch.

In HB, the audio is left at the default setting: AAC / 160 Bitrate (usually not ideal, but for some reason I can not get a decent op from HB if I raise this) / Dolby Pro Logic II. The op vid says the audio is MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a) 48k. Was hoping someone might have a suggestion. Thank you!

Hi, there.

First of all, great to hear that our suggestions fixed your original issue!

As for your audio compression issue, we do transcode media when it is uploaded to your account dashboard, but it should not result in too much of a loss of quality. When I downloaded a few of your transcodes, they all have the same bitrate and sample rate for the audio.

Are you comparing the audio from the file that you uploaded (the outputted file from Handbrake) to the result that is being played through our player? Have you downloaded the transcodes from your account dashboard (Content > (File) > Sources and then you can copy the URL, paste it into your browser and then download it)?

Please let me know. Thanks.

Hi

"we do transcode media when it is uploaded to your account dashboard..."

Right - and that's where I think the issue is. I know you say there should be too much of a loss of quality - and there isn't. It's very slight, and as I said, most people wouldn't hear it. But I do. I am willing to accept that this may be more of a HB issue; it's possible that the transcode there is doing something to the audio - so very slight it isn't audible, then when it gets transcoded again at u/l, that's where the artifacts become audible. Not sure why anything higher than 160 is causing me problems :/

"Are you comparing the audio from the file that you uploaded to the result that is being played through our player?"

Yes - the file as it sits on my HDD before I did the u/l, compared to the file that is on your server.

"Have you downloaded the transcodes from your account..."

Good idea, but I can't seem to figure out how to do this. I am at the content page ( #/content/list ) and I see the vid, but do not see "sources" as you made mention. A r-click on the file brings me here:

https://dashboard.jwplayer.com/#/content/detail?key=Aj3QkTOa

- and there is a "sources" tab there, but I see a whole bunch of stuff that does not seem to reference the vid.

Thanks!

When you’re looking at the list of your content, there should be only one file, “WMST3.mp4”. Click on the name of the file and you will be brought to a page with more detail about it.

When on that page, here is how you can download one of the transcodes. Here is also a screenshot so you can visualize what I am talking about.

1. Click on the “Sources” tab.
2. Click on the arrow on the right side of whichever transcode you want to download.
3. You will be presented with two URLs, the first is the URL for the actual video file. The second is the URL for the poster image (preview image) for it. Click on the “Copy” button to the right of the first URL to copy it to your clipboard.
4. Paste the URL in your clipboard into the address bar of your browser. After you press enter, the video should start playing. While it is playing, you can right-click on the video and choose “Save As..”

Is there any way you can post the original file, post-Handbrake, to a server somewhere and give me a link so I can download it and take a look?

Thanks.

Ok, my bad. I was comparing the vid on the site to the wrong HDD vid. I was comparing it to the original. Upon further review, the HB transcoded vid does indeed contain the artifacts. I have started a thread at that forum, and hopefully I can get some help. Thanks for the time.

Just a little FYI, in case you come across someone else with an audio issue. The best thing to do is choose "pass thru" from the codec menu. So, the audio in my original file is 320. If I choose 320 in HB, I get artifacts, even tho the audio in the new file is 320. At the suggestion of someone on the forum - if I choose "pass thru", there are no artifacts.

Maybe this can help someone else.

Cheers.
