Related xml format

This question was briefly brought up in another post but i want to confirm

The playback and the loading of the related xml seems to me to work just as well if you use the standard JW Player playliist rss type.that is used for playlists.. in fact I have changed to using .xml files for all playlists including related and it works great.
So the question is, why does the documentation on related playlists show a different setup format to the other playlist documentation?
I just don't want to be confused any more, I seem to be able to use one format across all scenarios ( to use .xml with the same setup as is mentioned for rss playlists)
