Problems playing HLS live streams on iOS devices using JW Player 6.11

We recently upgraded to JW Player 6.11 to resolve issues we were having with HLS streams playing in Flash on Windows in version 6.8. Now we are having extensive issues playing HLS streams on iOS devices, particularly iPad 2 and iPad 3. Streams will only play for a few seconds before freezing, and the player will display as a solid black area occasionally when revisiting a page.

We are wondering if there are parameters/settings we are not setting correctly for iOS.

On a side note, streaming to Windows has been much improved with version 6.11.

Have seen some talk that the problem could reside with iOS 8.01 - 8.1. We are definitely seeing more problems on older devices.

I’m not really sure what your issue is, or how to diagnose it. I tried playing a stream, and I see 404 not found errors for your m3u8 manifest: http://cl.ly/image/0w40160s3N2w. Can you provide a full source URL to an HLS stream so I can troubleshoot?

For optimal playback of your HLS streams, we recommend that your segment durations are around 10 seconds each, and that keyframing is done every 4 seconds.

The 404 error was due to the stream not running - either it had ended before it was scheduled to be removed from the site or had not yet begun. We have quite a few streams running in the middle part of the day today.

Our segment duration is at 10 seconds and keyframes are every 4 seconds.

We were able to find an iPad running iOS 7.x and it played our HLS streams in the browser using JW Player 6.11 perfectly. The issue does appear to be isolated to the combination of iOS 8.01 - 8.11 and JW Player. We are not sure if the recent versions of JW Player perform differently on iOS 8.01 - 8.11.
